An Open Letter to the Dreamer Trying to Do it All

June 27, 2019

Hey Dreamer,

If you’re reading this, I want you to know I see you.

I see you working that 9-5 grind, providing for your family in more ways than one, fighting the epic internal fire that burns within you. On one hand, you’re trying desperately to keep that fire alive, to guard it from being suffocated by mediocrity, fan the flames, start something new, something spectacular, iconic, life-changing. But on the other hand, you know well and good that extraordinary things are not built overnight. So you passionately work on changing your life before work, during work, and after work. You work after serving your children all day, after meal prep and cleanup, fights and tears, books and homework, doctor appointments and routines, laundry and yard work, activities and bills. You work before serving yourself, before a hot shower at the end of the day, before kicking your feet up and knocking off the day, before rest, before feeding your body, before feeding your soul.

You’re trying to dream it all, to build it all, to do it all and be it all. I see it taking a toll on you. I see it taking a toll on your relationships, on your health, on your spirit.

I see you frustrated with where you stand today in your journey to pursuing your passion. You thought you’d be farther along by now. You’re smart, capable, driven and can grind with the best of the them, and you probably find yourself wondering (more than once a day) why it hasn’t happened for you yet. Why not you? Maybe it was the precious babies you prayed, brought into this world and nurture all day. Maybe it was your commitment and dedication to not moving forward unless things were just right, unless the stars aligned. Maybe it was your health that you neglected for too long in the spirit of serving everyone else first. Maybe it was the family issue you spent time resolving. Maybe it was your company pulling the rug out from under you causing you to spend more energy searching for a job that pays the bills. Maybe you tried and failed. Maybe you got tired of fighting. Maybe you just got plain old tired. Maybe you can’t figure out what the best next move is. Maybe way down deep you aren’t ready (and that’s okay). Maybe this is not your time. Maybe this is the season of practice, of hustling, of learning who you really are, of discovering where this dream fits in your queue of priorities.

While the exact reason of why you are where you are in your journey is complex and deeply personal, I do know this road to entrepreneurship, to transforming your career, your life, is hard stuff. Setbacks, road blocks, challenges, struggles and issues. Whatever you want to call them, they’re real and they’re hard. I want you to know it’s okay to feel frustrated. It’s okay to feel defeated and alone at times, like no one understands you. It’s okay to question, even doubt, yourself. Though we all find ourselves in this space of self-criticism and defeat at some point, I pray you don’t stay in that lonely place for too long. Beating yourself up and running your body into the ground won’t get you any closer to your goals.

Recognize when enough is enough, when you need to come up for air, take a break, take a breath, disconnect and embrace the good of the present right in front of you. Listen to the signs your body and soul are whispering (or shouting) to you. No dream is worth your health - mental or physical. No dream is worth your relationships. No dream is worth your happiness. Don’t lose sight of what’s most important. Protect those fiercely. Just know it’s okay to press pause. The dream will still be there when you return ready and refreshed.

Don’t lose faith.

Seek help when you need it. We all need help sometimes.

Believe in yourself. You’ve got this. I see you, I believe in you.

All my best,

Laura
